This beautiful Chess Board Box is handmade using traditional veneering and inlay techniques.
This box is made from solid cherry. The white squares of the board are maple burl and the black [red] squares are curly makore. The edging is crafted from nogal walnut with mother-of-pearl inlays. Inside, pieces are protected in Kaizen foam, which is used extensively by photographers for lens storage. The 3” pieces are hand carved (not by the artist) and nicely weighted. The whites are boxwood and the blacks [reds] are golden rosewood. The design is an adaptation of the most popular chess set used at major international chess tournaments throughout the 1950s and 1960s, most notably the World Championship Candidates Match that was held in Bied, Zagreb in 1959. The Chess set comes with two styles of King finials (crosses) that are easily removable, allowing the players to choose between the original (Orthodox) and western styles.
The hinges and clasps are polished solid brass.
Dimensions are 18"x9"x 3" tall
